Harris County Governmental Resources

The Office of Social Services for Harris County provides the community with assistance for low to moderate income families and individuals in need. If you move to Harris County and need assistance with paying your utility bill, mortgage, rent, or even finding bereavement services then you can contact Harris County to learn more about how the county can provide you with assistance in your time(s) of need.

Unfortunately, Harris County has seen its share of natural disasters over the past several years. As a result, homeowners in our area have seen a need for recovery services increase in that time. Fortunately, Project Recovery exists for Harris County residents. This county program exists to help homeowners restore their homes which were damaged by floods during the past few years. Being able to be reimbursed for work performed on the home or even helping to build a new home are just a few of the benefits available to residents of Harris County.

Being able to travel freely around Harris County is critical for residents- especially elderly, disabled, or low-income individuals. Harris County Transit Services has identified this need in our community and provides residents who do not have access to METRO bus services an opportunity to take advantage of alternate forms of transportation. A bus can come to your home and take you to the doctor, the store, or any place on their predetermined route.

Harris County also partners with various employment services to help you find work if you are moving to Houston after a divorce or child custody case. If your ex-spouse moved here with your children, you may have come here as soon as possible to not lose touch with your kids. To be able to make a home for yourself in Houston it is important for you to be able to find work. Texas Workforce Solutions, the City of Houston and Harris County job listings are great places to start your search for work.

Finally, the Harris County Community Services Department focuses on addressing the housing, infrastructure and public service needs of low to moderate income individuals. By securing grants from the US Office of Housing and Urban Development, the Harris County Community Services Department can assist in helping you with down payment assistance, home repair and in providing after school care for your children.
