Medical Resources in San Antonio, TX

San Antonio is a major medical hub for South Texas, offering residents access to large hospital systems, academic medical centers, community health clinics, and comprehensive pediatric and emergency services. A substantial share of the city’s healthcare activity is concentrated in the South Texas Medical Center (STMC) on the northwest side of the city, but major hospitals and clinics are also located in other parts of the metropolitan area.

South Texas Medical Center

The South Texas Medical Center (STMC) is the core of San Antonio’s healthcare network. It covers roughly 900 acres and includes 75 medically related institutions, more than 45 clinics, 12 major hospitals, one higher-education institution, and numerous smaller practices and offices.

Within the medical center are major facilities providing services such as trauma care, cancer care, transplant services, cardiac care, women’s health, rehabilitation, and a wide range of specialty and subspecialty services. Institutions in the district include University Health’s University Hospital, UT Health San Antonio (the academic health center), Methodist Children’s Hospital, and other specialty and general hospitals and clinics that serve patients from San Antonio, South Texas, and surrounding regions.

Primary and Outpatient Care in San Antonio

University Health, the public hospital district for Bexar County, operates two teaching hospitals and a network of outpatient centers and clinics that provide primary care and specialty services across San Antonio and South Texas. Its primary care services include family medicine and internal medicine at multiple clinic locations, allowing residents to establish ongoing relationships with primary care providers for preventive care and chronic-disease management.

In addition to University Health, other hospital systems such as Methodist Healthcare and Baptist Health System maintain hospitals, emergency departments, and associated outpatient services in various parts of the city, including the traditional Medical Center area and rapidly growing corridors like the Far West Side near Loop 1604 and Highway 151.

Affordable and Community Health Services

Several federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) and safety-net providers expand access to care for individuals and families who are uninsured or have limited financial resources:

  • CentroMed operates a network of more than 20 clinic sites that offer pediatrics, women’s health, family practice, and same-day “walk-in” visits, along with behavioral health and dental services at some locations. CentroMed accepts insurance and offers a sliding-fee discount scale based on income and family size; patients are not denied services solely because of an inability to pay.
  • CommuniCare Health Centers is a full-service primary healthcare system with multiple locations in Bexar County and nearby counties. It provides pediatric and adult primary care, women’s health, senior care, dental care, behavioral health, pharmacy services, WIC nutrition services, and other specialty and community programs.

The City of San Antonio identifies FQHCs such as CentroMed and CommuniCare as key options for uninsured residents, noting that FQHCs provide care regardless of insurance status and use sliding-fee discount programs consistent with federal guidelines.

Pediatric and Family Care

San Antonio offers several dedicated pediatric facilities and extensive children’s services within larger health systems:

  • CHRISTUS Children’s (Children’s Hospital of San Antonio) is the only hospital in San Antonio exclusively focused on pediatric care. It provides inpatient services, pediatric emergency care, and a wide range of pediatric specialties and subspecialties for children and families from the region and beyond.
  • Methodist Children’s Hospital, located in the South Texas Medical Center, is a major pediatric hospital that offers specialized care for infants and children, including services such as pediatric heart surgery, orthopedics, neurosurgery, bone marrow and stem cell transplants, and a dedicated pediatric emergency department.
  • University Health Women’s & Children’s Hospital, on the University Health main campus in the Medical Center, provides comprehensive care for women and children, including labor and delivery, neonatal intensive care (Level IV NICU), and pediatric emergency and specialty services.

These pediatric hospitals and associated clinics offer routine pediatric care, immunizations, urgent and emergency treatment, and advanced specialty services for infants, children, and adolescents.

Specialty and Emergency Services

San Antonio supports broad access to specialty and emergency medical care through its academic and private hospital systems:

  • UT Health San Antonio, the academic health center located in the South Texas Medical Center, provides clinical care across many specialties, including oncology, neurology, orthopedics, transplant, and other advanced clinical services, in partnership with affiliated hospitals and clinics.
  • University Health offers Level I trauma care, transplant services, and a wide range of specialty clinics and hospital-based services through University Hospital and its expanding network of locations.
  • Methodist Healthcare and Baptist Health System operate multiple acute-care hospitals and emergency departments across the greater San Antonio area, providing services such as cardiac care, stroke care, surgical services, and inpatient rehabilitation.

Emergency departments at these major hospitals, along with urgent care and after-hours services offered by systems such as CommuniCare, provide 24-hour or extended-hour evaluation and treatment for urgent and emergent medical needs.

Together, the South Texas Medical Center, public and private hospital systems, community health centers, and specialized pediatric facilities give San Antonio residents access to a wide spectrum of healthcare services—from primary and preventive care to highly specialized and emergency treatment—while safety-net providers and FQHCs help maintain access for uninsured and underinsured members of the community.
